The Stranded Lighthouse

Ninety kilometres from water, a lighthouse stands on the dry floor of the Aral Sea. Salt dust clouds its lens, abandoned hulls rust in the distance, and the state has decided its final useful act is decommissioning.

Aigul has kept the lamp burning since her father died tending it on the night the water retreated. She trims the wick, cleans the glass, and opens the register. Each time the lamp is lit, new names appear: ships, crews, and passengers who will never arrive.

When Daulet, a state inspector, comes carrying the order, he expects an obsolete building and a stubborn keeper. Instead he finds a record growing beneath his hands, and a duty no form can calculate.
