The Last Time We Were Hungry for Each Other

For twenty-two years, geologist Dagný and marine biologist Stefán have built a life in Reykjavík from work, weather, parenthood, and the small competent habits of two people who know each other well.

Then Dagný learns that mutual desire may be a finite reservoir. Every act draws it down. Nothing restores it. When the couple tests their own supply, the gauge is nearly empty.

Suddenly, tenderness has arithmetic. A dinner can become a cost. A touch can feel borrowed from the future. The harder they try to preserve what remains, the less spontaneous anything between them becomes.

Outside, Iceland's winter holds subterranean heat beneath rain, basalt, and dark water. Inside, Dagný must decide whether the instrument has revealed the end of wanting or changed the way they look at each other.

Some measurements describe a life. Others begin to replace it.
