The Goat-Mother's Chart

Every goat in the herd lives twice: once on the steppe, and once in the stitches inside Altynai's coat.

The story

What waits inside

Her daughter Saygil knows the chart by fingertip. A ladder for the doe who fears dogs. A knot for a difficult birth. A dark bar for a life that ended. But knowing the marks is not enough. To become the next goat-mother, she must carry the herd in posture, scent, judgment, and touch, until the animals themselves accept her.

Altynai is tired. Winter is approaching. And one barred stitch keeps returning Saygil to the kid her mother could not save when the living count slipped behind the cold.

As mother and daughter divide the work between them, care becomes instruction, intimacy becomes risk, and every error acquires a heartbeat. Saygil wants to relieve the woman who taught her. First she must learn what cannot be taken, only entrusted.

The coat records the dead. The herd decides who carries the living.
