One Step Missing

An injury ended Nino Beridze's international dance career. Reconstructing a suppressed village dance could bring her back to the stage and prove that her grandfather protected the people whose history disappeared in 1937.

But elder dancer Maia will teach only six approved counts. The seventh survives elsewhere: in an extra line worn into a village floor, in a children's clapping game, and in the way Nino's ankle locks whenever she tries to remove it.

A state-sponsored premiere offers recognition, funding, and a clean story of national endurance. The dance refuses to cooperate. Every attempt to explain its forbidden beat strips away the ambiguity that kept it alive, and the names hidden inside its rhythm include victims, informers, and survivors who were never innocent enough for legend.

As opening night approaches, Nino must choose between the heroic inheritance she came home to claim and a communal memory that will not let any family stand pure.
