Mend the Dress

Thiri is the last seamstress in an old Yangon tailor shop. Six months after her mother's death, she opens a trunk of unlabelled garments left by the British tailor who employed three generations of her family. At the bottom lies a Burmese wedding dress from 1925.

The first time Thiri repairs a loose seam, she enters the body of the girl who tore it. The dress remembers every woman who wore or altered it, but releases each life only where needle and thread meet damage.

A hem reveals a resistance courier under Japanese occupation. A sleeve holds a wife at a prison gate after the 1962 coup. Other tears carry an artist into the Saffron Revolution and a young protester into the streets of 2021. The state burned its records. The silk kept the touch.

With eviction approaching and a foreign buyer waiting, Thiri reaches the final wound: a bullet hole over the heart. To mend it, she must witness the one memory her mother could not tell her.
