On linen laid inside a working tent in the Ahaggar, a sleeper leaves more than warmth. Moisture holds appetite, illness, fear, longing, and the shape of an absence. Tiniri has spent years learning to read that record with the disciplined touch her aunt demands.

She has also learned where the hand must stop.

Her mother crossed into the moisture of a man already dead and did not survive the reading. What she found was never spoken, yet Tiniri still feels its pressure beneath her calluses.

When a traveler named Hassane lies on the guest linen, the text he leaves is not ordinary. It pulls at her mother's unfinished wish and at Tiniri's own unread desire. To continue, she must practice the hardest part of her craft: holding what remains without turning another body into her answer.
