The Lamplighter's Second-Skin

Every dusk, Camilo walks a working alley in Oaxaca with beeswax under his nails and his dead father's knife in his pocket. He lights handmade tin lamps for the women who pour wax, braid wicks, file vents, cook, mend, wait, or refuse.

Those who stand beneath a lamp grow a thin wax-pale second-skin, marked by the lives the light has witnessed. Camilo can read the marks, but only after he learns that seeing is not ownership, silence can be skilled work, and a woman's feet remain the final yes.

Don Aurelio died before reading the oldest registers. For years, the women have carried his unfinished light on their bodies. Now Doña Esperanza is ready to stand beneath her lamp, and what she carries may reorder everything Camilo believes he inherited.

Some truths need illumination. The most intimate ones still decide whether to be spoken.
