The Gate Count

At Ise, young miko Hana is learning the rhythm of an ancient rebuilding: timber by timber, footstep by footstep, breath by breath. Her mentor, Setsuko, teaches her that nothing may be forgotten. Yet one absence has already survived for twenty years.

Hana's mother omitted a single unit from the gate count. The missing year should correspond to a cypress cut for the previous rebuilding. The tree is still alive.

As Hana traces the gap from ritual memory into the forest, she enters the silence surrounding her mother's last service. Each answer threatens the people who preserved the count, and each question tests the difference between obedience and care.

To become the next keeper, Hana must confront what inheritance asks us to repeat, what love asks us to conceal, and whether a tradition can remain whole after the missing thing is named.

The gate remembers what people choose not to.
