His cargo is Taoudenni salt: bone-pale slabs cut by hand, bound in rope, alive with every name spoken over earlier loads. Across the thousand-kilometre road to Timbuktu, Sidi must recite that chain each night. Forgotten salt turns bitter. Bitter salt becomes a curse no kitchen can use.

His brother Hamed knew the same law. Two years ago, thirst killed him on the crossing and left his cargo sour in the desert.

Sidi has not gone back.

First he must deliver this new load without letting grief enter its taste. The days burn. The nights freeze. Water, rope, camel pads, and memory all demand exact attention. Every mistake has weight, and every name costs breath.

But the farther Sidi travels, the less certain he becomes that one true cargo can pass the place where another was abandoned.
