The story
What waits inside
Every old Sana’a house carries a small tin bell and the family name on its rope. When war scattered the residents, the bells kept ringing. Hadiya became their warden: one dusk circuit, one pull per house, one full note to keep each absent family connected to its door.
True means the family is not finished. Hollow means they are gone.
Her daughter Nawal’s bell has always rung true. It is the only news Hadiya receives, and she has built a life around not asking the sound to promise more than it can.
Now a hollow note has entered the alley.
Hadiya cannot locate its house. Wind, stone, and memory throw the sound between walls. Until she finds the right rope, every bell carries the same terrible possibility.
In a quarter where attention keeps a family audible, can one old woman listen closely enough to tell grief from distance before the silence chooses for her?
