The story

What waits inside

For fifty years, the undrunk wine from Merriden’s standing glasses has filled a communal cask. At weddings, each pour names someone absent, holding joy and missing in the same small ritual.

Rowan Hale, wedding MC and keeper of the pour-ledger, plans to open the cask cleanly at the town jubilee and leave without becoming anyone’s symbol of return. Then familiar handwriting appears beside Rowan’s own name, year after year.

As the noon ceremony approaches, Rowan discovers the ledger was never meant to certify death, exile, or blame. It records the people a community kept present, and asks whether coming home can remain an invitation instead of becoming a debt.

What waited in the cask was never only the wine.
