What Presses

In Lalibela, archivist Selam trusts records because people can refuse to answer. Then a visitor presses an old cooking vessel against a rock-hewn church wall, and the stone releases the memory of the hands that last surrendered it.

The woman claims the vessel belonged to her executed mother. The wall reveals something harder: she was the informer whose words helped condemn its owner during Ethiopia’s Red Terror.

Selam begins tracing a confession that official archives cannot admit and courts could never use. When the memory reaches into her own family, neutrality becomes another form of concealment, and truth demands recognition without offering anyone the comfort of innocence.
