The Wake Line

Every ship leaves feeling in the water, and every reading takes memory.

The story

What waits inside

Bugis cartographer Sari inherits a fish-skin chart drawn in cuttlefish ink. It records no routes or depths, only the emotional wake of every vessel crossing its Sulawesi channel: despair, hope, patience, fear.

The chart is still changing. Reading it can locate boats no instrument sees, but each attempt costs Sari part of her own emotional memory. A beloved voice becomes a fact. A mother’s face loses its warmth.

When a container ship carrying Rohingya refugees sinks, an impossible color spreads across the parchment. Sari can preserve the memories that make her herself, or spend them searching for strangers whose lives may depend on what she is willing to forget.

Compassion is not free when memory becomes the price of rescue.
