The Felt Mountain

When a poncho arrives from a man dead nine years, Wara knows the garment has not finished its work. Her hands find Felipe in the worn shoulder, other makers in the beaten nap, and a route leading toward Mamani, the apprentice meant to receive it.

Mamani's mother has just died. She refuses the cloth.

Wara carries it into the high pasture instead. Village by village, the poncho gathers names and teaches her how an object can outlive ownership without becoming a relic.

Against Wara's body rests a second unfinished garment. Her mother died making it for Wara's wedding twenty years ago. It has stayed cold ever since.

Now both cloths are asking something of the same hands, and the mountain offers no answer beyond weather, distance, and the next honest step.
