The story

What waits inside

For twelve years, Ajka has turned testimony into evidence at The Hague without allowing either to touch her. Then an uncle’s death leaves her a Bosnian warehouse packed with objects looted from refugee homes after Srebrenica.

Each chair, saucepan, coat, and child’s shoe has an auction receipt. Read together, the receipts reveal coded witness statements and a network of men who profited from emptied rooms, some still powerful enough to keep the inventory buried.

Returning the objects should be a procedure. Instead, every rightful owner brings Ajka closer to the grief she made a profession of avoiding, and to the father whose absence never entered her own files.

Evidence can close a case; return opens everything it cannot repair.
