In the Atacama Desert, Yara Quispe smells a unique fragrance in the minutes before someone dies. Blind since childhood, she has served her village for forty years, arriving in time for last words, held hands, and prepared rooms.

She has never detected her own ending. Death-scents open fully only in rain, and rain almost never reaches this driest place on earth.
