The Hands That Made This

Kyoto woodworker Hana Kitō inherits a master’s workshop and the steel chisels that have never felt entirely still in her hands. In her world, the first touch of any handmade object receives the maker’s full sensory echo.

The chisels carry more. Calluses, hesitation, pride, and guilt have accumulated through every craftsperson who used them, reaching back to the blacksmith who forged the set in 1889 and a killing buried with his name.

Hana wants to make one object that holds only her own touch. First she must learn whether using an inherited tool accepts its history, repeats it, or adds something the chain has never carried before.

Every tool remembers the hands; not every hand chose the weight.
