The Amber Keeper

At dawn, Austėja walks the tide-line and listens. As the coast’s amber keeper, she finds each stone by its name and places it back into the right hand. Returned amber stays warm. Forgotten amber turns bitter.

One stone has been missing for a year.

Austėja’s grandmother was the keeper before her. She taught Austėja the shore, the ledgers, and the patience of cold hands. Then she lost a stone no search could recover, grew ill, and died leaving Austėja a blank line that will not close.

The wet sand yields other people’s names. Never the missing one.

As winter thins the light and the old bitterness keeps pace with her search, Austėja must decide how long a keeper can walk one shore before the search itself becomes another way of losing someone.

Can a name come home if grief is looking in the wrong place?
