The story

What waits inside

Each night the station assembles itself from borrowed memories: a lamp, a clock, rain on a stranger's journey home.

The trains promise no destinations, only stories the living may carry. The Conductor once mistook mercy for permission, and her vow is absolute: ask the question, never answer it.

Then Nora arrives in a paper crown. She cannot answer, and the platform around her is failing. As the last train nears, keeping the vow may abandon a child to a place that cannot hold her.

A tender, mysterious novel about memory, mercy, and the stories love is allowed to keep.

"The floor goes soft under you. The bench stops feeling like a bench." She nodded toward the cast iron under him. "You'd have noticed already. You feel anything wrong with it?"

He considered the question as she'd watched hundreds of passengers consider it, testing weight against weight, checking a beam before he trusted his own knees to it one more time. His hand found the arm of the bench and pressed once. Then, as though the first press hadn't settled him, he pressed a second time, lower, at the leg where the iron met the oak floor. It was the small private test of a man who had spent a working life reading whether glass would hold before he sealed it into a frame and trusted a customer's roof to it.

The doors of the pale gold train opened without sound. No hiss of hydraulics, no announcement, no ceremony beyond the plain fact of them no longer being closed. Anton Weir stood and tested the provisional platform under his feet as he had tested the bench, one slow shift of weight from heel to toe. He did not look back at her before he boarded.
