Silence Sculptor

In their home near Inari, every comfortable silence becomes warm, translucent sculpture. Clear layers hold mutual understanding. Dark bands hold avoidance. Polar night accelerates both.

Now the sculpture fills the hallway, presses against the windows, and stands between an elderly couple and the winter woodpile outside.

Aino, a retired Sámi duodji teacher, reads its grain. Mikko, a retired reindeer herder, understands pressure. Only they can carve the mass, and every cut requires the exact memory inside it to be spoken aloud. What they remove returns as lived experience.

Their twelve-year-old granddaughter can see the sculpture. She can also see the bands her grandparents refuse to touch.

To open the door, Aino and Mikko must decide which silences made their marriage a shelter, and which have made it a wall.
