Ash Library

In Kigali, archivist Claudine Uwamahoro keeps no books. Her shelves hold ceramic vessels filled with ash from letters, photographs, school records, and testimonies destroyed during the genocide. When sifted, each handful releases the memory of its burning.

Now the government wants a national monument, a Belgian university wants searchable data, and survivors demand custody of what was taken from them. Claudine’s brother wants the doors shut before the library consumes her lungs.

Then one vessel offers a trace of the family story Claudine crossed continents to recover. To follow it, she must decide whether memory belongs to the living, the dead, or whoever is willing to breathe it.
