The story

What waits inside

Dr. Sarah Kundima returns to Papua New Guinea's highlands to document a language she no longer speaks. Hidden in her grandmother's house, she finds a flute carved from cassowary bone.

When Sarah raises it to her lips, there is only silence. Then she is standing in another person's body as an Australian patrol enters the mountains. A stranger's fear settles among her own memories.

The flute holds a century of first contact, mission schools, vanished forest, and promises made by people who never meant to keep them. Its remaining keepers have been waiting for Sarah. Her husband wants her home. A mining company is moving closer. Every memory makes it harder to know which parts of her life are hers.

To preserve what was taken, she may have to become its next living archive.

A fierce, intimate novel about colonial inheritance, ecological loss, and the difference between possessing a history and consenting to carry it.
