She had completed this procedure two hundred and seventeen times. She knew because she kept the station log and, as Tarsaval's only researcher, had nobody else to count.
Repetition ordered each movement: case opened, connector inspected, braid checked, locking ring tested with a thumbnail. The sequence belonged to her hands before thought. Solitary work rewarded procedures that survived distraction and weather.
A southwesterly chopped the grey sea, driving whitecaps from the Minch into the mouth of the bay. Tarsaval pier extended like a stone arm into water that had no business being so cold in September. Generations of boots, ropes, and fish crates had polished the granite smooth. When she knelt at the edge, cold travelled through the knee of her trousers.
She lowered the hydrophone hand over hand as the braided cable paid through her gloves and caught against her palm. At three metres the weight remained perceptible; at five it disappeared, the line slackening as the sensor entered the thermocline. She secured it to a cleat with a half-hitch, logged 14:47, and read the last gauge at 2.1 metres on the ebb. A steady twelve-knot wind crossed the water, singing thinly through the rigging of fishing boats moored at the pier's far end.
Salt had stiffened the outer braid despite yesterday's rinse. Through her gloves, she felt each ridge and the smooth section where friction had polished the sheath. She marked it for replacement during the next maintenance interval.
Fifty metres from shore, the station occupied a converted croft house with whitewashed walls, a corrugated roof, and a useless satellite dish. It served as laboratory, kitchen, and sleeping place during the weeks she did not go home. The interior was dry and warm, smelling of solder, instant coffee, and the particular salt that permeates everything within half a mile of the Atlantic. She hung her oilskin beside the door and sat before the analyser.
The recording was already running, its waveform scrolling across the screen. Nothing unusual appeared: surface noise, water slapping the pier legs, and cable strumming in the current. Beneath them lay the sea's constant pressure against the shoreline, a movement so large and slow that the hydrophone registered only a subtle baseline inflection.
Every component held a familiar spectral position and pattern. Morven separated impact from turbulence, current from cable resonance, without replaying the file. Such recognition was ordinary competence.
It was standard enough to process in her sleep, and she almost saved the file and moved on.
The CalMac ferry was crossing the Minch, invisible from the station window but locatable from its timetable: a 14:50 departure from Tarbert, now fifteen minutes under way. The vessel would be sitting deep in the water with its engines at economical cruise. Morven knew its acoustic signature as intimately as the shore birds' calls: broad-spectrum, low-frequency dominant, saturating every channel for miles.
The recording changed as its waveform thickened beneath a wall of low-frequency energy, drowning the sea noise and everything below it. Morven watched the interference scroll past, the ferry moving through her hydrophone like a weather system over a town. That interval contained no conventionally usable data; she could delete it as she had before.
She reached for the mouse, but opened the spectral filter instead.
Her fingers moved before conscious thought, although this particular action was not habitual and she could not have explained it. She dragged the band-pass across the display, removing everything above two hundred hertz and below twenty. As the filter narrowed, the ferry drone collapsed to a thin line and vanished; the waveform flattened.
And there was something else.
A pulse: low, regular, precise. It had been present throughout, beneath the ferry, the drone, and the cumulative noise of the crossing. Fifty-two hertz, repeating every nineteen seconds. When she magnified the trace, its clean morphology appeared: a sharp attack, a slow decay, silence, then another pulse. Like a note held under water.
She enlarged three cycles and set cursors at each onset. Intervals differed by fractions of a second, inaudible casually but analytically significant. No clipping distorted the peaks, nor did an obvious processing artefact recur.
The time-correlation tool separated the continuous pulse from the ferry's transient position. Against the tide gauge, however, the trace followed every cycle, slack, ebb, and flow with a six-minute phase lag. Its propagation path appeared deeper than the ferry channel, and its duration exceeded the vessel's passage.
She opened a new log entry. She typed: 52 Hz pulse detected beneath Minch traffic. Tidal correlation with six-minute phase lag. Investigate further.
She studied a waveform too structured to dismiss as random. Its intervals approached mathematical regularity: eighteen point seven seconds, nineteen point two, then eighteen point nine. The variation exceeded simple measurement error and resembled propagation delay through a non-uniform medium. Multiple distances might be involved, whether through several sources, movement, or another geometry she had not identified.
She pulled the tide tables from the shelf: first quarter, neap tides. Pulse amplitude was lower than she would expect at springs, consistent with reduced water movement and energy, but the relationship was nonlinear. Amplitude declined faster than tidal height, suggesting some response within the source or propagation path without revealing which.
The display held correlation, not explanation. It preserved linked changes and the delay between them, but could identify neither mechanism nor intention, nor distinguish life from an unfamiliar physical process.
