In the Faroe Islands, the drowned sometimes wash ashore exactly three days later, breathing, dry, and unable to remember the water. They are called the Awakened, and they can never close their eyes again.

At first, her father’s return feels like grief reversed. Then sleeplessness begins its honest work: hallucinations, failing organs, and a mind that remains awake while the body breaks beneath it.

Elin joins the fierce nocturnal community gathering in an abandoned church, where jokes and vigils hold back the dark. Loving her father soon means choosing between keeping him present and recognizing when presence itself has become cruel.
