The story

What waits inside

One night each year, the House Between opens its doors to forty versions of the same couple. They arrive from lives shaped by different choices, bringing stories of renovations, children, old griefs, and happiness that looks enviably complete from across the table. At midnight, everyone returns to the world that is theirs.

Everyone except Marit and Casper arrives together.

Six years after their divorce, the restoration carpenter and the water engineer still make the journey in separate cars. They write separate names on tags meant for two. They endure familiar faces wearing every life they might have lived, then leave without asking the question that follows them home each year.

As the next Alignment approaches, Casper wants at last to understand why their marriage ended. Marit wants one evening she will not spend measuring her life against forty alternatives. To leave the House differently, they must stop asking which version got it right and decide what their own unfinished bond is allowed to become.

A warm, wry speculative novel about marriage, comparison, and the dignity of the life that is actually yours.

Reader promise

You will feel what it is to stand in a room full of the lives you almost had — and walk out, on purpose, into the only one that's yours.

World premise

One night each year — the Alignment — the branches of a single couple can convene in the House Between, a venue that exists only that night; attendance is optional, nothing may be exchanged but talk, and at midnight every pair returns to its own world.

Earned theme

Every life is somebody else's counterfactual. The branches aren't a verdict on your choices; they're proof that the two of you were always, in every world, worth convening around.
